Our Team

Walk through our office and you’ll hear a variety of accents and an array of perspectives on the challenges we’re tackling. Listen closely and you’ll notice something else: a shared sense of purpose. Everyone here is determined to make a difference in the world. Sure, we’re working hard to achieve our mission. We also look after each other: celebrating our successes, birthdays and holidays, and the occasional Super Bowl victory. You might say that we put the “community” in community solar – but that would be corny, so don’t say that. Just say that we’re a group of people who enjoy working together.

Our Leadership Team

Nate Owen

Founder & CEO

Nate Owen is the chief visionary, evangelist, and driving force at Ampion. Nate founded Ampion in 2014, based on the conviction that the renewable energy revolution needed the same type of support that he previously created to facilitate the development of competitive electric and gas markets across the United States.

As the founder and CEO of ESG, Nate led efforts to establish data and business process standards in New England, New York, PJM, ERCOT, and California. His business served several thousand energy companies, including prominent retail energy companies, utilities, and major oil companies using market-leading CIS, CRMs and billing systems to acquire and service millions of customers. Nate brings unique and unparalleled experience and insight into the highly complex world of energy, data, and utilities. After selling ESG, Nate pivoted to supporting the renewable energy sector and founded Ampion in order to bring best-of-breed energy retailing systems and back-office support to renewable energy asset management.

Nate has Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Political Science from Bowdoin College. He is the proud father of three, enjoys cruising and racing his sailboat, playing basketball and following Boston sports.

Andrew Kvaal


Andrew joined Ampion in 2019 after nearly a decade of leadership roles in the educational publishing and technology industry. As the General Manager of a business unit within Cengage, Andrew led a team growing online learning solutions for competency-based programs with a strong emphasis on credentials and employability. Prior to that, he served as the Senior Vice President of Technology Strategy and Operations where he led significant change management initiatives across the 1,000-person technology organization as Cengage transitioned into a digital-first media company.

Earlier in his career, Andrew led corporate strategy consulting engagements for The Parthenon Group across a variety of industries that included education, restaurants, retail, and private equity. Ampion represents a return to his roots of sorts, as the initial years of Andrew’s career were spent in early stage software companies.

Andrew has a bachelor’s degree with a double major in Geography and Environmental Studies from Middlebury College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. His personal time revolves mainly around the activities of his family, especially those of his two daughters, but he occasionally finds a window for playing his guitar or throwing around his fly-fishing rod.

Jess E. Willard

VP, Finance

Jess joined Ampion in 2019 after 7 years in the SaaS space, most recently at Recorded Future a threat intelligence provider within the cyber security vertical. He joined Recorded Future as the Controller (employee #50) and led all international accounting and finance functions. Eventually focusing on leading all FP&A functions prior to a successful exit in July 2019 to Insight Venture Partners while overseeing ARR growth from $5m to $70m and employee growth to just over 400. Prior to that he was the Director of Finance at Enservio (insurance tech) heading up accounting and FP&A functions prior to successful strategic acquisition by Solera. 

Prior to that, Jess spend 6+ years in public accounting with Levine, Katz, Nannis + Solomon (now Katz, Nannis + Solomon) providing a wide array of tax (corporate, individual, SALT), assurance (primarily audit services for VC backed high tech startups) and consulting services. 

Jess has a bachelor’s degree from Suffolk University. He is a proud father of two and most of his time away from work revolves around spending time with them and extended family who also live in MA. This spare time is typically spent playing guitar in the family band (basement only), attending Boston sporting events, golf and skiing. 

Bill Kanzer

VP, Member Engagement

Bill joined Ampion in 2019 as Vice President of Member Engagement and so is responsible for subscribing members to each solar farm. He is truly “mission driven.” Bill has spent virtually his entire career working in solar energy. He has a wide range of experience in solar, having held positions in marketing, sales and operations for commercial and residential solar installers, finance companies and manufacturers.  
Prior to Ampion, Bill was one of the founders of Relay Power, which specializes in Community Solar customer acquisition.  Relay Power was a spin-off of Next Step Living where Bill was in charge of business development for Community Solar, previously as director of solar operations and before that in charge of training for solar.  Previously Bill was the Director of Marketing and Sales for All Earth Renewables, a solar tracker manufacturer.  At Tioga Energy, a solar power purchase provider, Bill was responsible for channel sales.  Bill was director of marketing at Alteris Renewables, a solar and wind systems integrator serving utility, commercial and residential customers.  Earlier in his career, Bill was the director of marketing communications for Evergreen Solar, a solar panel manufacturer.
Bill has a mechanical engineering degree from Northeastern University and an MBA from Boston College.  Outside of work, Bill spends his time with his wife and two daughters and enjoys the outdoors and a wide variety of music.

Philip Kenny

VP, Engineering & Product

Philip joined Ampion in 2019 as head of Technology and Product Management. Philip has 20+ years of experience in Technology leadership positions including CIO and CTO roles at large and small companies. Most recently, Philip served as CIO for Shorelight Education, a 600 person organization with significant presence in China, India, UAE, Korea, Vietnam, where he led the creation of Shorelight’s “Live” classroom-to-classroom product. Prior to Shorelight, Philip served as SVP of Product Development for Intrado, a $4B global leader in mission critical communications where he led the acquisition, integration and development of Intrado’s fastest growing products. 

Earlier in his career, Philip served as CTO and then Global CIO for British Telecom’s Unified Communications Business Unit, the fastest growing BU in BT’s venture portfolio of products, growing from $12M to $500M in 7 years. Philip received the CEO Choice Award for his role in this success. Prior to BT, Philip co-founded the world’s first Billing SaaS company – MetraTech, which was subsequently acquired by Ericsson.

Philip has a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from National University of Ireland at Galway. He is the proud father of four who keep him very busy outside of work. Philip served as Treasurer of the Irish Youth Sports League for several years and still coaches his daughters in Gaelic football and Camogie.  

Mike Hendershott

Director, Subscriber Experience

Mike Hendershott serves as the Director of Subscriber Experience overseeing the back-office operational processes from enrollment to billing, while providing engagement and support throughout the subscriber lifecycle. Mike brings over a decade of retail energy experience ranging from customer service, client on-boarding, regulatory participation, technical deployments, and now brings that expertise to the renewable energy sector.

Prior to joining Ampion in 2019, Mike worked at ESG utilizing his high-level management skills to deliver top-tier service and implement sophisticated enterprise-level solutions. He developed and integrated end-to-end client implementation processes which enabled efficient go-to-market strategies for both domestic and international projects, leading to record client onboarding numbers and servicing millions of customers. 

Mike has a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Curry College. He lives on the Cape with his wife where he enjoys spending time outside with their dog, especially the beach. Mike is an avid Boston sports fan and music enthusiast. He loves to travel and catch-up with family and friends whenever he’s got a free moment.
