Renewable Energy in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is leading the country by example. Despite its geographic size, D.C. has set monumental renewable energy goals (100% renewable energy by 2032!). Community Solar is a critical component that will help D.C. reach this target. Ampion is thrilled to help the city on the Hill save money on electricity costs and meet its renewable energy goals.

The district passed Community Solar legislation in 2013, known as D.C. Act 20-186. The first Community Solar site went live in D.C. in 2017, and by the spring of 2021, 164 Community Renewable Energy Facilities (CREFs) were actively producing electricity on behalf of D.C. subscribers.

Rooftops, parking lot canopies, and capped landfills (known as “brownfields”) double as Community Solar farms that produce clean, climate-friendly energy on behalf of subscribers. Community Solar is available to all PEPCO utility customers in D.C., including homeowners, renters, businesses, government organizations – anyone who pays an electric bill! When you subscribe to Community Solar with Ampion, you can feel good knowing that you’ll be saving money while supporting local energy produced right here in D.C.

Ampion Billing in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. uses a dual-billing method for its Community Renewables program. This means you'll receive two bills each month: one from PEPCO, and one from Ampion. Don’t worry about the two-bill system – you’ll still be saving on your electricity spend! Here’s how:

Renewable energy credits are applied to your utility bill each month, based on your share of the energy produced by the solar farm. These credits reduce and in many cases eliminate any payments owed to the utility. You then pay Ampion at a discount for those credits. This is where the savings come in!

In D.C., the discount is 10%. Think of this as every dollar of credit only costing you 90 cents. So you pay Ampion less than what you would have paid the utility.

Sound too good to be true? We hear that a lot! These savings are made possible by state programs designed to increase adoption of renewable energy in D.C. The result is a win for everyone involved.
