Renewable Energy in Maine

Did you know that Ampion was started in Maine? Yup! In Choco-latte Cafe in Bar Harbor. Nate Owen (our Founder) grew up in the state, went to college at Bowdoin, and lives there still. And he’s not alone -- many of our employees have close ties to the state.

So, imagine our excitement when Maine announced its community solar program! We knew we had to be there to do our part. It’s a great deal for residential subscribers - a guaranteed discount on credits that are applied to your utility bill (this is the standard community solar model).

While Maine’s program is relatively new, dating to 2019, it’s an aggressive approach that has already enabled dozens of community solar farms to be developed in the state. Bringing investment, employment, and clean energy choice to the state. With oversight by the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the program includes strong consumer protections and governance.

Ampion Billing in Maine

The State of Maine has created a dual billing Community Solar program. This means you'll receive two bills each month: one from your utility (for example, Central Maine Power or Versant), and one from Ampion.

Depending on your utility and the Community Solar program you’re in, you’ll see either a kilowatt hour (kWh) reduction or a credit on your monthly utility bill, based on your share of the energy produced by the solar farm. In many cases, your subscription will eliminate any payments owed to the utility.

You then pay Ampion at a discount for your share one month after you've received the benefit. This is where the savings come in!

Think of this as every dollar of value from your share of the solar farm only costing you 85 cents. So you pay Ampion less than what you would have paid the utility.

Sounds too good to be true? We hear that a lot! These savings are made possible by state programs designed to increase adoption of renewable energy in Maine. The result is a win for everyone involved.
