Community Solar became an option for Ogunquit residents and businesses with the recent passage of several state laws. In 2019, Maine became the 21st state to pass Community Solar legislation that encourages development of these renewable energy projects. The laws aim to significantly increase access to Community Solar and other renewables for businesses and residents, regardless of the type of building or home they’re in.
In 2019, Ogunquit joined the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission’s Regional Sustainability and Resilience Program.
Ogunquit takes sustainability seriously. The town’s Sustainability Committee meets regularly to keep their agenda forward and keep the environment top of mind in the town’s operations. The committee maintains a helpful website, called Sustainability Ogunquit. It’s a useful resource for residents and others in southern Maine to stay informed about important environmental issues that affect us all.
Around the time the Community Solar laws were passed In 2019, Ogunquit chose to participate in the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission’s Regional Sustainability and Resilience Program.
Ogunquit got together with a few neighboring towns, including York, Wells, Kittery, Kennebunk, and Kennebunkport to help each other with sustainability and resiliency initiatives.
This program, targeting coastal southern Maine, is a two-year pilot to identify climate change issues common to the group, and report on progress of the towns’ sustainability initiatives. Ogunquit and the other towns in the program support each other as they incorporate sustainability into the operations of the communities, and coordinate strategies to do something positive about climate change. We’re big fans of this type of collaboration!
