Renewable Energy in Minnesota

As the first state to pass Community Solar legislation, the North Star State is a guiding light for the U.S.’s Community Solar adoption. In fact, Minnesota has the most Community Solar capacity and the highest number of Community Solar projects out of any state! Here at Ampion, we’re thrilled to be a part of the pioneering movement to connect Minnesotans to clean energy and electric bill savings.

Community Solar became accessible to residents, businesses, schools and commercial entities with the passing of “virtual net metering” legislation in 2014. As the first state to implement virtual net metering, Minnesota was the first to allow utility companies to credit their customers for subscribing to energy produced by a shared site. These energy credits are allocated to a community of subscribers, providing them with meaningful electricity savings. Xcel Energy established its nation-leading “Solar*Rewards” program. The intention? You guessed it – to reward Minnesotans for supporting local clean energy production.

As a trend-setting state pioneer in shared renewables, Minnesota has one of the most widely-accessible and widely-known Community Solar programs in the country. Minnesota’s Community Solar program puts the subscriber and the local community first, with the intent of making transmission and distribution costs as low as possible. To help facilitate this, and to help accelerate the growth of Community Solar projects, Minnesota Community Solar subscribers must sign up for a project in their county. Luckily, counties are adopting Community Solar projects all the time!

Ampion Billing in Minnesota

Wondering how Community Solar billing works in Minnesota? Subscribers receive credits on their Xcel Energy bill for the energy produced by their share of the solar farm. The credits offset their energy usage, and are billed at a discounted rate, saving them between 5 and 15% on their monthly electricity costs!

Sound too good to be true? We hear that a lot! These savings are made possible by Xcel Energy’s Community Solar Gardens (CSG) program designed to increase adoption of renewable energy in Minnesota. The result is a win for everyone involved.
